Is it wrong to
play the lotto if you are a Christian?
To my knowledge, there are no scriptures in the bible
directly related to gambling or the "lotto". The only scriptures that came to my mind
remotely related, were when the centurions were casting
lots for Jesus’ clothes!
As far as
playing the lottery, there appears to be a long line of
self appointed enforcers, from clergy on down, that
stand ready to "beat
you up" about that! Personally, I don't see a problem
with it unless you have become a slave to it. I mean, if
you are playing the lotto and your children are going
hungry, then I'd say you have a problem.
I simply
suggest you have fun! When the amount you put into the
lottery causes a hardship, then it's time to quit.
(actually before) Some of the same people that would
condemn you over this usually have no problem having a
church raffle, or bingo game. All in the name of doing
it for God! You know and I know that the chances of
winning are slim. My advice is to use common sense!
There is
nothing wrong with spending a dollar on a lottery ticket
if you can afford it! Similar to drinking, Jesus himself
drank wine, we are just told not to drink too much. Even
eating is not good when we do it "too much". So, use
common sense, have fun and if the day arrives that you
are struggling between buying a lotto ticket or putting
food on the table, you’ll know it’s time to quit!
